The Future Of Glow In The Dark Roads Is On Hold After Failed Tests

Glowing lines could still be a thing of the future...as long as it never rains

When we reported on the brilliant glowing street lines that were being tested in the Netherlands, we envisaged a Tron-like future for our roadways. Unfortunately that future has been put on hold after the first real-world tests failed.

The main issue that the glowing lines have encountered is that they do not glow brightly or consistently during heavy rain. Worryingly, the BBC has reported that some drivers turned their lights off completely to fully experience the lines' glow.

The lines use photo-luminising paint that soaks up the sun during the day, and glows during the night. The green lanes should stay illuminated for about eight hours under normal conditions.

Heijmans, the construction business behind the project, said "we will use these insights to introduce an update to the Glowing Lines 2.0 version" which will be released in the summer. "In the meantime we have temporarily faded out the lining to prevent any confusing situations for road users."
