Geneva 2009: Second Opel Ampera Teaser

Even with the future of the Opel (and Vauxhall and Saab and....) brand in doubt, new releases keep on coming. One set for the Geneva Show is the Ampera, a car we've seen teased and leaked recently. Now comes another official "teaser" from GM that reveals the entire front of the car.

Even with the future of the Opel (and Vauxhall and Saab and....) brand in doubt, new releases keep on coming. One set for the Geneva Show is the Ampera, a car we've seen teased and leaked recently. Now comes another official "teaser" from GM that reveals the entire front of the car.

Well, there it is! As you can clearly see, it's based on the Volt but with some changes that I think, make a big difference.

The Ampera follows a similar frontal styling pattern that has been displayed on recent Opel concepts like the GTC and Flextreme. It's fitting that the look would be debuted for production on an advanced production car like the Ampera.

Others have commented that the Ampera looks better then the Volt, and I'm inclined to agree. It looks more aggressive, and perhaps most importantly, more futuristic then the standard Chevrolet Volt.

I like it a lot, and I think this is one case where the re-badged (if you want to call it that, they won't be sold alongside each other) car looks better then the basis vehicle.

That is one of the other images that got leaked from a patent office filing for the Ampera's design. Not much has been changed from the Volt but what has been done makes a different. In fact, other then the front, everything is exactly the same from what we can see.

While I think the Ampera is the better looking one of the two, it's true that us enthusiasts don't exactly represent mainstream opinion. Maybe GM is betting the Volt's more conservative style will go over better with American consumers.

Time will tell! We'll be sure to keep you updated when the official press release and images on the Ampera are released.
