We’re still very short on details of the final episode of The Grand Tour featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, but now we at least have a rough idea of when we’ll be able to watch it: according to May, it’ll be hitting our screens in September.

May confirmed the date – sort of – on a live recording of the BBC’s Today Podcast, according to the Evening Standard. “I’m not allowed to tell you what date it’s coming out, so I won’t say that it’s September,” he told the presenters. “I can say anything I want now, frankly.”

As part of the same interview, May reflected on his time working with Clarkson and Hammond, first on Top Gear and then The Grand Tour. “I thought, when I started doing it in 2003… that this was a bit of a laugh. Maybe it’ll last a few years. And here we are, grey and wizened and sagging. And we’ve only just stopped doing it.”

May spoke of his final day of recording voiceover for the programme, calling it a sad moment. He also said it was “unlikely” the three presenters would ever work on TV together again.

While we now know we only have a few short months left before we can watch the trio’s send-off on The Grand Tour, actual details on the episode itself are still scarce. We know where it takes place – Zimbabwe – and that, if some apparent behind-the-scenes shots are to go by, that it features a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, Triumph Stag and Ford Capri.

Also still unclear are Amazon’s apparent plans to keep the show going afterwards with an all-new presenting team, and who these presenters might be.

While the end of the road for The Grand Tour is approaching, we can still expect more James May-fronted TV in the form of his Our Man In… travel series on Prime Video, although we won’t be seeing any more of his cooking show, Oh Cook!, which has become a curious victim of its own success.
