Here Are All The Juicy Details Of Porsche's New Flat-Four Engines
We discovered earlier this year that Porsche will sadly (but inevitably) be opting for the downsizing route to deal with ever tighter emissions regulations and rising fuel prices, and will soon offer turbocharged four-pots in its cars. Car magazine has seen the spec for the new four-cylinder lumps, and has revealed that they’ll be nicely powerful.
The engines will be flat-fours rather than inline, sticking with the ‘boxer’ layout of the existing sixes. The range will consist of a 1.6-litre with 210bhp, a 2.0-litre with 286bhp, and a 2.5-litre with 360bhp. All will be turbocharged.
The torque figure for the 1.6-litre is yet to be revealed, but the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre will come with a punchy 295lb ft and 347lb ft respectively. Not bad.
The Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne will be the first to receive the downsized units in 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre form, but exactly how the 1.6-litre fits into the range hasn’t yet been decided. The four-pot engines will soon spread to other models; with as much as 360bhp available in the 2.5-litre - and no doubt more power to come - we can expect a four-pot car at the bottom end of the 911 range before too long.
