Forget any other track car you’ve ever seen, as what McLaren has just unveiled will surely be the most extreme circuit weapon ever built. We had our first glimpse at this hardcore track version of McLaren’s already rather hardcore P1 last month, but we can now get a good look at this beast courtesy of the car’s official reveal at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event in California. Well, almost. It’s actually a ‘design concept,’ but it shouldn’t be too far from the final product, which will cost prospective owners £1.98 million each when it goes on sale next year.

Only around 30 will be sold, all to owners of the regular road-going P1. For that rather substantial sum of money, you get a revised 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo and electric motor, bringing the power up from 903bhp to 986bhp. The front track has been increased by 80mm, and in each of the flared wheel arches sits a lightweight 19-inch alloy wheel wrapped in slick rubber. For extra raciness, each has a centre locking wheel nut, and the track Macca comes with an onboard air-jacking system similar to the one you’d find on the 650S GT3 car.

The aerodynamic package has been heavily revised, incorporating a new front splitter, reprofiled radiator ducts, a redesigned rear diffuser and a giant fixed rear wing replacing the active one found on the road car.

At the rear, we can see that things are a little more naked than the road-going P1, and the single trapezoid exhaust has gone in favour of two drainpipe-like exits. The design concept is finished off in a spiffy orange and silver colour scheme inspired by the F1 GTR test car McLaren used in the mid-1990s before its assault on the world of GT racing.

Much like Ferrari’s ‘XX’ cars, purchasing a P1 GTR signs owners up to an exclusive driver programme. McLaren Special Operations will keep and maintain the cars, bringing them out to special track events where owners can drive them in anger. In addition, buyers will get driver training and access to a racing simulator.
