Here’s The Horrifying Sight Of Dozens Of Innocent Motorbikes Being Crushed By Earth Movers

The City of New York put up a live stream this week showing dozens of seized motorcycles and ATVs getting crushed to death as part of a publicity stunt

You might ask yourself why exactly the City of New York and the NYPD decided to obliterate a bunch of motorbikes so publicly (skip to the 29min mark for the actual crushing). Well, it’s all about proving a point. Responding to all the criticism in the comments section of the video, a City of New York Facebook page admin said:

“These vehicles are illegal in the City of New York. We are committed to making the streets of our city completely safe. That means leaving no opportunity for these things to find their way back to our roads and further endanger our fellow New Yorkers. This is the same reason we destroy the guns we confiscate.”

Putting aside the extraordinary wording which compares these machines to firearms, it’s important to note he or she is only half right: they’re illegal to ride on the street in New York, not illegal full stop. And why crush them in some daft publicity stunt which most people will see right through? As many of the commenters suggested, why not auction them off to people who’ll use them properly? Why not indeed…

They are ATV and Dirt Bikes. Not made for or ever intended for street use. No indicators or anything needed to be cleared by Department of Transportation for use on road. As such they really are not illegal unless used in an illegal manner. It’s just ignorance by those in charge to destroy them rather than sell or put in use with agencies that use them. Such as the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Do they not know that these bikes were STOLEN? A lot of NY gangmembers come up here to New Hampshire / Maine and steal bikes off craigslist and bring it back to the Bronx. I feel like they should track whos bike it is and get it back to them instead of wasting THOUSANDS of dollars on this crap.

I just don’t get it! Why in any country would you crush vehicles?! Why not just auction them off and make some cash? WHY?

The point was that they wanted to prevent the vehicles from ever entering the streets of NY again.

Step 1: Sell the bikes where they’re legal
Step 2: Get money
Step 3: More funds for police

Step 4: Funding from selling seized vehicles means they don’t need to give everyone tickets for going 3 over.

Mustangs have a great potential of endangering the citizens of New York, but you don’t see NYPD crushing those (I’m sorry, I’ll let myself out)

Speaking as a resident of New York City these dirt bikes and ATVs are a nuisance to drivers when people bring them out during the warmer months. It cool to see a swarm of 20 or so dirt bikes doing wheelies down the streets as an observer but as a driver they completely ignore the rules of the road and create unsafe streets.

Driving in NYC is awful with or without dirt bikes…
