Here's How You Jump Start A Car Using Nothing But A Jack And Some Rope

Stuck somewhere without jump leads and have a flat battery? Here's an unconventional solution...

This method is something we’ve seen before, and what’s happening is fairly straight forward - the guy here is essentially simulating a ‘bump start’ with a stationary car. Just like in a bump start, the movement of the driven wheel turns the engine over, creating enough compression for it to fire.

There are a few things to bear in mind, though. It’ll only work with a manual gearbox, and if you’re only jacking up one side, you’re going to want a car with an open differential. It’s also - for various and hopefully obvious reasons - not that safe, so you’re probably better off just waiting for recovery. Unless you’re stuck in some Bear Grylls in the desert drinking his own urine kind of situation.

If it’s a manual, you just get it rolling about 5-10 mph then pop the clutch in 2nd to crank it. Don’t even need the jack. Just a hill or a friend.

I’m a bit confused, what’s an open differential? Also, did he put the car in first gear? If so, why and will it also work if the car is in neutral?

Then traction control kicks in and it drives itself off the jack 😂

The danger of push starting a car is that the chain or belt drive might not take it and crack or jump a tooth and mash your valves together.
