With the car’s debut at the Rally Deutschland next month edging closer, all the glorious pictures and details of Toyota’s new rally weapon have been flooding in. With the whole car stripped back, the GT86 CS-R3 weighs just 1080kg. There’s a fettled version of the FA20 2.0-litre boxer engine under the bonnet (now with updated software, a higher compression ratio and changes to the cam-lift), which is expected to produce 240-250bhp, so it should be suitably rapid. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox.

There’s a full, weight-optimised roll cage made to comply with FIA regulations, while two sets of suspension have been developed: one for tarmac rallies and one for gravel events.

The car is set to compete in the World Rally Championship’s R3 class, but won’t be driven against the clock in Germany. Instead, it’ll be used as a ‘pathfinder’ car, going out on each stage for safety checks before the rally cars go on their timed runs.

The cars will be available in kit form starting early next year. For now, we’re able to see the car undergoing testing in the video below.
