Here’s Your First Look At The New VW I.D. SUV Concept

For better or worse, VW is now really pushing its electric vehicle agenda. The e-Up and recently updated e-Golf are already available buy, and now there’s a new member of the futuristic ‘I.D.’ concept family.

Following the I.D. and I.D. Buzz, we now have an as-yet unnamed coupe-ish SUV EV. VW is teasing it ahead of its Shanghai Motor Show debut, revealing only that - like previous I.D. concepts - it’ll go autonomous at the touch of a button, with the steering wheel retracting into the dashboard.

The point of all this? According to VW, it’s all about “advancing electric drive vehicles from the status of a start-up niche to large-scale production models by the middle of the next decade in a worldwide product offensive”. in other words, in about 10 year’s time, a huge chunk of VW’s product range will be electric.

Let’s just hope we can hang on to the Golf GTI for a little longer…

What’s the point of retracting the steering wheel? You can’t take control if something goes wrong.

That’s just the typical concept car chic. There is no way Volkswagen can make a retractable steering wheel legal, not even with all their lobbying.

Well, they say it’s zero emissions. But I bet its default road mode will be “Roll Coal”.
