An advert by Cycling Scotland has been banned by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA). The issue relates to the fact that it is "socially irresponsible" to depict a cyclist not wearing a helmet.

Cycling Scotland has argued that wearing a helmet is not a legal requirement, reflected by the fact that some cyclists did wear helmets in the ad, while others did not.

ASA also took issue with the fact that "the cyclist...appeared to be located more in the centre of the lane when the car behind overtook them and the car almost had to enter the right lane of traffic.

"Therefore, for those reasons we concluded the ad was socially irresponsible and likely to condone or encourage behaviour prejudicial to health and safety."
