Honda Has Filed A Patent For What Looks Like A Baby NSX

Patent drawings for a mid-engined sports car have emerged - could this be the long-rumoured baby NSX?

‘Baby’ NSX rumours have been going on so long, I can’t remember a time when people weren’t talking about the prospect of such a thing. And now, thanks to some new patent images posted on the European Union Intellectual Property Office and making their way through the motoring media, a little brother for Honda’s mid-engined supercar is back on the agenda.

The car shown in the images has no roof or windscreen, perhaps to give a better view of the interior. In the snug cabin, we can see a pair of minimalist bucket seats, and an F1-style rectangular steering wheel. Because apparently a D-shaped wheel is now too mainstream.

On the outside, the family link to the NSX is clear, and despite previous rumours suggesting a front-engined car, the side intakes and cooling vents on the rear deck are dead giveaways for a mid-engined layout.

As to what might power such a thing, we’ve no idea. Buy hey, we like a bit of speculation, so we’re going to have a stab in the dark and suggest it’ll have a similar hybrid system to the NSX, with an electric motor for each front wheel and another attached to the engine on torque fill duties.

That engine will likely be a lot smaller than the 3.5-litre V6 found in the full fat NSX - perhaps an inline-four or inline-three.

Am I the only one who thinks that midengined cars should get roofless as an option from the factory? They’re typically reserved for perfect weather already and they look so much more impressive that way.

It would be interesting to know what price range (and power output) this is going to be in. Is if going to be more of an S2000 successor (although if it is mid engined hopefully they give it a different name) or is it going to be more of a Boxer/M2 rival at a higher price point?
