It’s not often we really care when a model gets a facelift. Generally it’ll just involve a few minor aesthetic updates here and there, occasionally a new engine or two. And while that’s exactly what this Honda Civic refresh gets, it has piqued our interest thanks to the introduction of a new Sport model, which gets a makeover inspired by the insanely-styled new Civic Type R Concept..

The current generation Civic is arguably the least attractive version of the popular hatchback Honda has ever produced, so a little nip and tuck wouldn’t go amiss. Visual upgrades across the whole range include new headlights featuring integrated LED daytime running lights that give a decidedly more aggressive face, along with a redesigned front bumper and LED rear lamps.

The most intriguing model is the new Civic Sport, with its supposedly Type R-inspired styling. The front bumper gets a lower grille mesh, while the rear spoiler is colour coded - on standard models it’s available in any colour, as long as it’s black. The Sport also sits on unique 17-inch alloys, though they do look a little lost in the arches.

Engine-wise, nothing exciting yet, I’m afraid. You have two options: a 1.6-litre, 118bhp diesel or 1.8-litre, 140bhp petrol engine. ‘Sport’ certainly doesn’t refer to performance, then.

The inside also gets a little touch up, and implements the new Honda Connect infotainment system. Powered by Android, it controls everything from the radio to the satellite navigation, and even features internet functionality.
