How Insanely Good Would The New BMW M2 Look As A Hatchback, Saloon And Drop Top?

The new BMW M2 is a seriously cool car on paper. Not only does it come with 364bhp, it’s also available with a manual gearbox, comes with sublime-looking aero and features a ‘Smokey Burnout’ function.

While the car looks as good as the numbers suggest, we couldn’t help but imagine what the car would look like in a few different body styles. So with that in mind, here are renderings of the M2 as a hatchback, saloon and cabriolet:

You may wonder why we’d need an M2 saloon (confusingly, BMW’s naming strategy would mean it’d be called an M1, so bear with me), but if there’s one criticism levelled at the M3 saloon plus the M4 coupe, it’s that both cars are too untamed and occasionally too much of a handful to drive.

The M2 saloon, therefore, would be the perfect M3/M4 antidote with its more manageable power output (364bhp vs the latter cars’ 425bhp) and smaller dimensions. And lest we forget the M2’s Smokey Burnout feature!

BMW M2 cabriolet

A cabriolet version of the M2 would be another winner in our eyes. While BMW never made an open-air version of the 1M, that’s not to say that it won’t happen this time around. Sure, performance would be dulled slightly to necessitate chassis strengthening, but if it works for the M4, then it’ll work here too. To date, however, BMW has denied rumours of a cabriolet version.

A hatchback version of the M2 would be the perfect nod to the breadvan-style Z3 M Coupe, itself a 321bhp icon with a 3.2-litre straight-six, a 0-60mph time of 5.2 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph.
