In November of last year, we reported on the return of the DeTomaso name for a range of new vehicles. Italian businessman and former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo purchased the name and put into motion a plan for a return to the marketplace.
Word came out recently that Rossingnolo was looking into purchasing a plant from Fiat, and that his company had the full backing of the Italian government. The new lineup will be a high-end brand, with a goal of 8,000 units sold per year. It is unclear whether the plan will include DeTomaso coming to the United States market.
Reports have consistently pointed to three new models in the pipeline – a sedan, coupe and crossover, with a new model to be shown at the Geneva Auto Show in March of 2011.
Over a year since it was made official, renderings of one of the new DeTomasos has surfaced on website Jokeforblog.blogspot.com.
It hasn't been clear what model will be introduced at Geneva, but we would say the likeliest is a coupe or sedan, and probably a coupe. The name is reportedly SLC. The new renderings don't indicate which it it is (although the C probably indicates coupe) but they give a bit of an idea of the design language DeTomaso will be going with.
The car has a long hood and flowing lines. DeTomaso has been very tight-lipped but hopefully more information on what car is set to be introduced will come out before March.
It's exciting to witness the rebirth of the DeTomaso name. We can't help but wish a new Pantera supercar is in the works somewhere down the line though....
