Infiniti Is Brewing An Electric Halo Performance Car
Infiniti is planning a performance electric car, according to reports, and it could be here within a couple of years. A concept is even closer, scheduled to arrive at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
It’s fair to say that the UK and Europe haven’t really got Infiniti since its arrival here back in 2008, but the company, Nissan’s luxury arm, sells plenty of cars in North America and Japan. Bosses are looking to seize on the EU’s push towards electrification to reposition the brand as a pioneer, and as a desirable alternative to the German behemoths we all know.
This halo model will be at the pointy end of that move. Rather than taking its base from an existing model it will be all-new from the ground up, prioritising performance and handling to try to capture a ‘unique’ driving experience.
The project is said to use some of the technology found inside the awesome Prototype 9 concept car we saw last month (and pictured below), presented in ‘a different context.’ The new car probably won’t look quite as dramatic, then, but it might resemble the Emerg-E concept from 2012; a vaguely Peugeot RCZ-ish shape clearly designed for speed.
We don’t know much else at this stage, but we do know that Infiniti is late to the party on this, like a lot of car makers. Just like everyone else, Infiniti is playing a tricky game of catch-up if it’s going to get anywhere near Tesla within the next 10 years.
