It Looks Like The Peugeot GTI Badge Is Dead
The GTI sub-brand has been linked to fast Peugeot products for years, but now the company wants to bin the badge in favour of a new name. Decision makers at Peugeot are considering a rebrand to align with a shift to EVs.
The new 208 hot hatchback will most likely use an all-electric powertrain as opposed to a petrol engine, reflecting the general future direction of the company. At the Geneva Motor Show the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered concept car was revealed, which was our first clue as to which name would be potentially replacing GTI.
Auto Express reports that Peugeot bosses favour ‘Peugeot Sport Engineered’ for upcoming performance models, which suggests GTI brand won’t be used again. Executives at Peugeot UK are said to be campaigning to hold onto the badge, to reflect the history it has across the country.
How do you feel about the demise of the GTI badge? Would you rather it stuck around, even to be used on an EV? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Well a lot of things are dying in the car world nowadays sadly….
Hopefully cars like the Taycan and Honda E make things exciting
True, but many things are also being born!
Doesn’t bother me, GTI is more a Volkswagen thing
Or me either. Since I live in a country where Peugeots aren’t sold in.
Auto Express also said that “Peugeot bosses in France have gone cold on the idea of calling the next 208 a GTi because of its all-electric powertrain.”
Probably a good thing since the “i” in GTi refers to injection. It would be kind of the same non-sense as the Taycan Turbo. But sad thing to ditch ICE on hot Peugeot…
Taycan Turbo makes sense tho. Turbo was a word long before Turbocharger was invented, and was used in Germany
Peugeot 508 btcc should have happened
It’ll still be PSE… A new badge maybe?
Pretty sure I read that there will be a petrol option for this car, and EV option ofc…
