Jeremy Clarkson Will Sign A New Three-Year Contract Soon
Rejoice! Not only is Top Gear back on our TVs, but the Mirror is reporting that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are all set to sign contract renewals that will see the presenters front everyone’s favourite car show until 2018.
The current deal ends in April, and there were calls for the show to be axed following a year of controversy - a leaked video appeared to show Clarkson mumbling a racist term, while Argentinians reacted angrily to what they believed to be an insulting number plate.
BBC Director-General Lord Hall backed the show today, saying “It’s a programme loads of people love and it’s important the BBC doesn’t have just one voice.” That’s an important point, as a huge part of the BBC’s remit is to create a variety of shows that appeal to everyone - cancelling a popular show because a few people complained would go against that.
Fortunately for fans, Top Gear is pretty much nothing without Jeremy Clarkson, so it’s honestly no surprise to see his contract renewed. This is, after all, the BBC’s most profitable show, and the organisation will want to keep it running as long as they possibly can.
Top Gear’s 22nd series continues on BBC Two every Sunday night at 8pm GMT.
