The Man Behind Android Wants To Hand Out Free Dashcams
Outside of Russia, the dashcam uptake has been fairly slow and steady. Now, one man wants to change that by offering free dashcams, but he wants something in return - tin foil hat wearers need not apply.
According to an interview with Wired, Android co-founder Andy Rubin revealed that he is working on a dashcam idea, with the plan to give the product away for free in exchange for the data it collects as you drive.
The reason for doing this is mainly stemmed in the potential for building a real-time map of the world, like a more advanced version of Google Maps’ current system for analysing Android phone data to map traffic density. There’s also the possibility that the images captured on camera could be used to create a more up-to-date Street View equivalent.
Rubin is keeping quiet about what else he’s working on, but for those concerned that we’re hurtling towards a scary, interconnected, robot-filled world, he had this to say:
“I don’t believe in Skynet or any of that stuff,” he says. “I believe, in general, that technology is used for good.”

where to apply for this?
Where do I sign up, free dashcam and improved google maps what more could I ask for.
dashcams should definitely be used more often. I’ve only had one for a few weeks, but already it has been used after a pretty severe incident that I was directly behind. Saved the police alot of time trying to work out who was at fault.
So if this guy wants to give them out for free in return for a little bit of data, then I say go for it.
would have been nice to get a link to it……
Sign me up… As long as I don’t get in trouble for speeding
Seriously, where do I sign up for this?
I’ll take one so long as it isn’t able to report speed. I would rather not have an increase in insurance costs. It would really be nice to have a dash cam in case something bad happened.
Ah, a good start to the day :)
sadly….. if the insurance will get my data I would not be able to get one. Even though i had never ever crashed in the 90k km I travelled in my live. (Except when I rammed a fence by backing up.
