For luxury brands and supercar manufacturers, emerging markets such as India and China are hugely important. That’s why McLaren is bending over backwards to make sure the 650S sells well in Asia. It’s so determined to strike it rich over there, that it has created a tailored model specifically for that market.

The new car is called 625C, and is available as both a coupe and convertible. The name refers to its power output of 625ps (616bhp), while the C stands for ‘Club,’ which McLaren reckons sounds less intimidating. It uses a toned down version of the same 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 as the 650S, which makes 641bhp in that car. Torque has also been reduced, from 500lb ft in the 650S to 450lb ft. Top speed is unchanged, however, so that’s 207mph in the Coupe and 204mph in the Spider.

So despite lower power figures, the 625C is hardly a slouch, but coupled with a reworked chassis and suspension it should be a more usable everyday car. According to McLaren, its refinements to the dampers give it the most refined ride of any Macca to date.

The 625C is now being sold in Hong Kong, and McLaren will roll it out into the rest of Asia eventually.
