McLaren Is Making An Ultimate Series Car With No Windscreen

Here’s a nice surprise for you - the next Ultimate Series McLaren won’t have a roof. Or a windscreen. Start looking at whatever the rich person’s version of eBay is for driving goggles, as Woking is cooking up an open-cockpit roadster.

Details are fairly limited right now - the press release is brief, and all there is to go on so far in terms of images is a single side-on render. We don’t even know what it’ll be called yet.

Some things we can guess, of course. It’ll almost certainly be built around an adapted version of McLaren’s Monocage carbonfibre passenger cell, and be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.

McLaren has at least said it’ll make 399, and given us an idea of when to expect it - the debut will be at some point in 2020. The roadster will still feature dihedral doors, and it’ll be Woking’s lightest ever car. The intention is for it to be geared more toward road driving than track work.

The price for this? We, erm, don’t know that either. All McLaren is saying at the moment is that the price will sit somewhere between the £750,000 charged for the Senna, and the £2.1 million needed to secure a Speedtail.

No doubt we’ll find out more in the coming months as part of a lengthy teaser campaign.
