Building a new supercar from the ground up is always risky. It can literally make or break a company, and for McLaren, the P1 absolutely had to work. In fact, it had to dominate. Why? Well, it’s all too easy to forget that when the MP4-12C was released back in 2011, many in the automotive press felt that McLaren had lost its magic touch.

Thankfully, when the P1 was released in 2013, it restored everyone’s faith in the Woking-based manufacturer. With its incredible 903bhp drivetrain, advanced carbon construction and ridiculous amounts of aero, the P1 effectively put McLaren back on the supercar map, and we haven’t looked back since.

To celebrate the success of the P1, McLaren has created one of the most incredible special editions we’ve ever seen. Now as we all know, the full allocation of 375 McLaren P1s sold out way back in August 2013, but as a tribute, McLaren’s Special Operations division has given one of the cars a full makeover.

The chosen car has received a stunning hand-laid carbonfibre body - with bespoke ‘Lio Blue’ tinted lacquer - gloss black wheels and a full carbon black Alcantara interior with contrasting blue stitching. And in a move that will make McLaren fans (me included) go weak at the knees, the Special Operations division has also forged the heat shield from 24-carat gold, in homage to the iconic F1.

McLaren will be taking this revised P1 to next month’s Geneva motor show, where it’ll be put on display next to a one-off 675LT Spider. Unfortunately the Spider hasn’t received the full c/f treatment, but it still receives a carbonfibre hard-top, carbonfibre airbrake and carbonfibre louvres on the front wings. The whole car has also been finished in a stunning ceramic grey paintwork.

I love how they are bringing back the gold heat shield. Just a piece of the legacy of the F1 to remember where this hybrid beast came from.

Looks great I’d love to see one in bare carbon fiber with the clear resin. That would be the sexiest thing I can imagine.
