Is A Merc Buyout Just What The Doctor Ordered For Aston Martin?

Rumours suggest that the Mercedes/Aston Martin engine sharing deal could be expanding to full ownership by the German firm

Last year it was announced that a technical agreement had been signed between Aston Martin and Mercedes AMG, paving the way for muscular AMG engines to make their way under the bonnets of future Astons. Mercedes-Benz took a five per cent share of Aston Martin, but its involvement could be going much further than that, with growing rumours of a full buyout of the British firm.

Amid the speculation, Merc boss Dieter Zetsche neglected to rule out the possibility of a buyout in an interview with Autocar, adding "This is a fantastic brand, and we are willing to support its further development." Even if this rumoured buyout doesn't happen, it's thought the initial engine sharing deal could evolve to include platform sharing, which would be mighty handy for Aston's future SUV plans.

What do you think? Could a buyout from a big car maker like Mercedes-Benz be just what Aston Martin needs to thrive? With Aston's ageing platforms losing touch with rivals, we reckon this could be exactly what it needs.
