The Mercedes-AMG GT Concept Is An 800bhp F1-Derived Four-Door Hybrid Monster
Mercedes-AMG’s next-generation sports car might be a practical four-door, but it’s not skimping on the speed or the F1 technology.
The AMG GT Concept, which has just been unveiled at Geneva, has a tasty 805bhp courtesy of a hybrid system that was directly derived from Mercedes-AMG’s F1 racing programme. It can run on EV power alone and smash through 62mph in less than three seconds.
It uses an energy storage unit that’s apparently more powerful than conventional hybrid batteries but at the same time lighter and smaller. Energy recuperation is by brake force, just like the ERS in Lewis Hamilton’s W08, but it also gets topped up by the engine when needed.
It’s a closed hybrid system that won’t need to be plugged in and that will always have electric power available. Err, like a Prius.
The electrification is being brought in alongside the thunderous biturbo 4.0-litre V8 and 4Matic four-wheel drive. Both the engine and electric motor will supply drive directly to the wheels, and interestingly, every wheel can receive torque individually via torque vectoring.
It’s being designed and engineered wholesale by AMG alongside the hypercar that we’ll see at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year. The GT will be the first of a range of cars to wear a new ‘EQ Power+’ badge denoting Mercedes’ advanced F1 World Championship-winning hybrid tech.
The Mercedes-AMG future is looking pretty electric, if you’ll excuse the pun. We now know that the GT Concept will have three operating modes: engine-only, electric-only and full-bananas hybrid. The battery unit itself is entirely scaleable, too, and you can take that to mean that it will make its way into plenty more cars, both on the AMG side and otherwise.
