A Mk2 Toyota MR2 Turbo Is A Rapid Bargain You Can't Ignore

If you follow us on Facebook, you’ll have seen that we were recently in Wales on a megashoot involving Mk1 and Mk3 versions of the venerable MR2, plus a GT86 and retro AE86. In the spirit of RWD Toyotas, we’re now in the mood for more of the mid-engined variety, which is why we’re taking a look at a used example of an MR2 that wasn’t present on the day: the Mk2.

The one that interests us most is the turbocharged version. Earlier MR2s were known for lift-off oversteer, so the quick turbo isn’t for the faint-hearted, but drive one properly and pick your cornering speed right, and you’ll be given a rewarding driving experience.

It’s a car with a powerful heart. Lift the engine cover behind the cabin and you’ll find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot which kicks out 218bhp, which is enough to get the car from 0-62mph in just over six seconds.

If you’ve ever looked for a Mk2 MR2, you’ll have noticed that there are a huge number of modified cars out there, some of rather dubious taste. That’s why we’re particularly tempted by this example. It’s an imported Japanese GT version, which has the all-important turbo engine. It’s entirely standard, has done a reasonable 110,000 miles, and looks to be in fantastic condition.
