The 'Mustang-Inspired' Ford Mach 1 EV Will Have A 370-Mile Range
Ford seems rather keen on digging up names from its past right now. This week we’ve learned that there’ll be a new Puma, and last year, the company announced that it would be reviving ‘Mach 1’. Both will be a radical departure from the cars that previously used the badges: the Puma is a compact crossover, and the Mach 1 an all-electric SUV.
We still don’t know a great deal about the Mach 1, but to tie in with the Ford’s multiple reveals this week - which included the new Kuga and Escape - it was announced that the vehicle will have a WLTP range of up to 370 miles. Or more neatly, 600 kilometres.
The link to the old Mustang Mach 1 will be via the styling rather than the mechanical stuff - it’ll be based on the same platform as the current Focus, with bodywork ‘inspired’ by the ‘Stang.
So far all we’ve seen of it is the teaser at the top of this page, but a full reveal at some point in 2019 should be expected. First deliveries will kick off in 2020.
The Mach 1 is part of Ford’s SUV and pick-up truck-focused reinvention, which will see almost all of its conventional cars disappear from the firm’s North American line-up next year.
Comments
I agree that manufactures need to produce fun electric vehicles to appeal to the enthusiast base, and the part of the larger market that has some enthusiasm for driving. However, I do not see the appeal in giving them names that represent legends of the past. Given that electric vehicles are still a very polarizing topic, this will alienate both sides rather than appeal to them.
Mustang inspired, don’t call that abomination Mustang inspired.
All these comments are fuss and bluster over a cars we all know are vaporware. Wink and a nod. Ford want’s nothing to do with electric cars. 370 miles by my calculation is around a 120 kWh battery. There’s no charging that overnight at home and Ford has zero network for charging. So if you buy it, good luck finding a place to fully charge it. I’ll wager real money this idea will fade quietly over the next 6 months. Ford is just trying to look like it’s actually Tesla competition. It’s not.
I wonder how the story of recycling used names went to be….
To be honest, they probably couldn’t come up with ideas for a new name so they got the recycling bin and thought “maybe if we can grab some names from there”. So they went and grabbed the first thing in their arms and the first thing they grabbed they used the name on.
honestly this is probably just my take
Well ford, you just disgraced the name of a legend, good for you
I’m fine, but if they call it the Mach e then I won’t be a ford guy anymore
