This Is The New, Drop-Dead Gorgeous Maserati GranCabrio

Maserati has pulled the roof back on the GranTurismo to create the GranCabrio, and you can have it with the Trofeo-spec Nettuno V6

Well, this was inevitable. With Maserati GranTurismo production now in full swing, the engineers at Modena have been setting about ripping the roof off the grand tourer to create the GranCabrio.

Obviously, it’s a gorgeous thing - it would’ve taken some effort to ruin the beautiful lines of the GranTurismo. Opting for a fabric roof rather than a metal folding hardtop isn’t a surprise given the old car did exactly that, but it’s still a welcome decision nonetheless.

Maserati says that can be tucked away, and put back up, at speeds to 31mph in as few as 14 seconds. With the Nettuno 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 providing a glorious soundtrack, though, why on earth would you ever want it up?

Don’t tell us you’re worried about wind noise or the cold, either. The GranCabrio will come with a neck warmer as standard to keep you and your front passenger cosy (sorry to those shoehorned in the back), while you’ll be able to optionally spec a wind-stopper which should help bring turbulence down.

We’re yet to hear any concrete performance figures, but the GranCabrio Trofeo matches the 542bhp of the GranTurismo. Although an expected higher kerb weight over the coupe’s 1,795kg figure will likely translate to a slower 0-62mph compared with the 3.5 seconds of the GranTurismo and a drop in its 199mph top speed. Not that any of that really matters.

For now, the Trofeo is the only version of the drop-top. We’d expect the coupe’s 483bhp version of the Nettuno to appear at some point and, with the GranTurismo Folgore EV in the works, potentially an electric option down the line.

There’s also no word yet on how much the Maserati GranCabrio will cost. With the GranTurismo Trofeo starting at £163,470, we’d expect it to nudge close to, if not over, the £170,000 mark.
