Is The New Fast & Furious: Legacy App Worth Downloading?
The Californi- based app publisher and developer, Kabam, released this freemium game alongside the FF7 film under full licensing from the franchise. This isn’t Kabam’s first shot at an F&F game. The studio released a less impressive Fast & Furious 6: The Game last year. After watching such an emotional film, it was hard to imagine jumping right into a game and enjoying it, but we gave it a shot. The app page drew us in by highlighting story missions around the world from all seven films, and tons of cars form the series and multiplayer mode.
The Features
- Over 50 licensed cars, including the Lykan Hypersport
- Multiple locations like Rio, LA, Miami and Tokyo
- Cosmetic customisation and performance upgrade options
- Game modes include Street, Takedown, Getaway, Drift and Drag racing
- Race against your mates or together in your own crew
The Good
- Most importantly, the game is free. So, if you don’t like it, you haven’t wasted your money by downloading it.
- If you played F&F 6: The Game, you’ll see much improved graphics and sound quality. The 1080p graphics show off the beautifully designed cars and colourful backgrounds. We played the game on a Galaxy S5 and an iPhone5, and it did quite well on both.
- The variety of racing styles throughout the story is something other mobile games lack. Games like CSR Racing get a little repetitive from competing in the same style of racing over and over again (no disrespect, CSR is still a great game). In F&F: Legacy, you are given different race missions in each location.
- It’s officially licensed, aka not a knock-off, so you get to drive the actual cars from all the movies. Along the way, you will receive directions from some of the main characters and little quotes that will remind you of your favourite moments in the films.
- It’s easy to learn, and the difficulty progresses slowly.
- You’re not bombarded with advertisements that ruin the racing experience.
The Bad
- It’s a freemium set up. If you want all the cool mods, you’re going to have to choose: dish out some money or earn it with hours of game play.
- After competing in several events, it forces you to spend in-game money to get an oil change. It’s not such a big deal, but there are little repair costs here and there that add up, in the hope that you’ll buy more gold.
- There is no audio from the actors. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it would have made the experience a little better. The guidance from the movie characters is from a pop up text and avatar.
- The drifting isn’t great at all, which is somewhat expected from a mobile game. You control the car through the turns with a simple swipe left or right. It seems like there is a lot of room for error when it comes to timing the turns just right. Although some may prefer this simpler method of ‘drifting’ (if you would even call it that), it doesn’t make you think about accelerating, braking or over steering.
Go for it! If you enjoy having a racing game by your side at all times, go ahead and download this one. It’s like having a collection of mini racing games in one app, and the developer claims that more game modes are coming in the future. There’s nothing to lose with a free game. Just don’t get lost spending a load of money for upgrades. You can download Fast & Furious:Legacy on Android here and for iOS here.
