This is the new track-focused 2016 Mustang Shelby GT350R, Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The ‘Stang’s increased pace comes thanks to a greater displacement (as yet unconfirmed by how much) and a flat-plane crank, which means it should be good for more than 500bhp.

The New Mustang Shelby GT350R Sounds Demonic

Ford has, perhaps sensibly, conceded defeat in the horsepower stakes. The Dodge Challenger Hellcat’s whopping 697bhp makes it great for a game of Top Trumps, but the GT350R aims to make up for lost ground by being a more drivable track weapon. Ford has resisted the urge to chase big power figures through forced induction, keeping the Shelby naturally aspirated. To make up for the lower power, aero and cooling improvements - there are vents on the bonnet and fenders and a pronounced aero kit on the front bumper - should make up for any time lost on the straights.
