The Next Honda Civic Type R Has Been Spotted At The 'Ring And It Looks Just As Mad As The Current One

Judging by this footage from the Nurburgring, Honda's next Civic Type R will still be the bonkers tearaway of the hot hatch class

We know from first-hand experience with our long-term test example that the current Honda Civic Type R is a bit of a belter, so the next one should be some piece of kit. The 10th generation Civic is after all a little lighter and has a lower centre of gravity, so drop in an evolution of the ninth-gen Type R’s suspension setup and 306bhp engine, and you’ve the recipe for something quite special.

We can expect the power output to rise, and from the sounds of this spy footage, a slightly more interesting exhaust note should come as part of the deal. We anticipate the car will stick with a front-wheel drive layout, and nothing in the video seems to suggest otherwise.

What’s clear even with the presence camouflage, is that the 2018 Type R should look just as lairy from the outside. There’s still an obnoxious rear wing and muscular wheel arch bulges, and this time the bonnet is vented - a hint at that more powerful engine we’re expecting and its greater cooling demands.

Could it also be the American-spec Type R? Because IIRC, Several sites are saying that Honda’s making a US-Bound Type R.

The part about this news of a Type-R debut in America that Honda forgot to mention to us was the death of the Si in the US. It would be like Ford trying to sell the Focus RS with no ST….it wouldn’t work because there is no system for would-be Type R buyers to buy something related but more affordable.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong UK/Euro users, but I’d assume this would REALLY benefit from being AWD.

can someone explain why new cars testing on the Nürburgring always have that weird black and white paintjob?
