The Next VW Golf Won't Have Estate Or 3dr Options
Volkswagen is to end production of two of the Golf’s body styles, according to reports, as buyers shun the long-standing hatchback in favour of SUVs.
Both the estate and the three-door body styles are expected to be axed at the end of the current generation’s life cycle, says Autocar, with poor sales the most likely reason behind the two-pronged move.
The MkVII Golf estate is a surprisingly spacious thing, with over 600 litres of luggage room in a compact platform that’s still easy to manoeuvre up a country lane. The three-door, meanwhile, is just cooler than the five-door, but today’s buyers are looking for a different kind of style.
SUV sales are said to be cannibalising the Golf range, with the chunky Tiguan and ankle-biting T-Roc now eating into the traditional hatchback’s numbers. The extra production expense of two superfluous body styles is now a cost worth saving.
The Seat Leon and Audi A3 have both already ended their three-door versions, while the other VAG mid-size platform-sharer in the family, the Skoda Octavia, never had a three-door option in the first place. The practical, spacious Skoda still sells well as a wagon.
This decision also means an end is nigh for the really excellent Golf Alltrack, which was built in estate guise only, after the fashion of Audi’s A6 and A4 Allroad. Likewise, the GTD estate, one of the finest all-rounders on sale today, will soon be no more.

Meanwhile, SUVs aren’t actually that bad.
That’s weird because you’ be surprised to know that Golfs sell really well near where I live in America.
Killing off the three-door version of the Golf isn’t a problem at all, IMO. The five-door version doesn’t look any worse, is much more practical and the weight and stiffness difference is neglectible.
If you want a Golf estate, you do what every sensible person would do and buy a Skoda Octavia Combi with some extra options.
Isn’t Škoda based of a last gen VW? For example The brand new Octavia is based on the mk6 Golf, and when the Golf mk8 comes out a Škoda based on the mk7 will come out?
What? Nooo.
Nevermind I’m gonna keep my wagon anyway
SUVs are shooting some of the best cars in the face with a shotgun. Just stop buying SUVs
the SUV disease is spreading like Europe’s Black Death in the 1350s
So the article you linked as what I am assuming is a typo of the word “source” does a great job talking about the upcoming Mk 8 Golf. The author goes into great detail about what we can expect for interior options, powertrains, design, and even hybrid options on GTI models. He only briefly mentions the 3 door and estate models being killed off in favor of reducing costs due to the larger demand for SUV’s. So why does your whole article need to be centered around the idea of “these cars are being killed off and you can blame SUV’s”? I don’t know if this is to just pander to your audience but I see it as poor quality and very uninformative.
I don’t care about the 3-door. It’s nearly dead since ages. When was the last time, you saw a 3-door Golf 7?
But that they kill of the estate is hard to believe. They just introduced the Seat Leon Estate in this generation besides the Ateca. Wouldn’t really make sense to kill the compact estates as long as the competition still sells a bunch of them
The 3 door MK7 GTI outsells the 5 door variant here in Wa State. In fact, I very rarely see 5 door Golfs unless it’s the R.
All 3. Same with the MKVI and MKV.
dude, i see tons of golf wagons, 3dr sure has not much point in a hatch that big only having 3drs, but the wagon, wagons always have a space in the market.
Soon ferrari says they will stop making 488 and gtc4lusso and start making high ass SUVs
That VW wont sell the Golf as an estate anymore is just a wrong information. Don’t share the information from your country where the estate doesn’t sell really well, look at the main country where VW comes from. Germany is a huge market and we’ll known as the estate-country even though there’s a suv boom upcoming too. All over Europe there is a good balance between 4-door hatchbacks and estates, VW wont take that down. That the 3 door version won’t be sold anymore was just a matter of time because most carmakers don’t sell 3 door versions of their cars anymore.
But I don’t believe that the estate will be taken down
