A Non-Limited, 'Purist' 911 Is Set To Join The Regular Range

Building on the success of the 911 R, Porsche is said to be planning a non-limited, driver-focused version of its rear-engined sports car
A Non-Limited, 'Purist' 911 Is Set To Join The Regular Range

Even with the arrival of the new Porsche 911 GT3 and its manual gearbox option, the R remains the purest of Stuttgart’s modern, rear-engined sports cars. It’s hard to argue with the recipe: take the 911 GT3 RS, remove all the hardcore aero gubbins, fit slightly narrower tyres and hook the 4.0-litre flat-six up to the kind of gearbox that has a stick shift and three pedals. What could be better?

The trouble is, Porsche only made 991 of them, and as a consequence, the cheapest used one we can find is nearly £400,000. However, there might be a new ‘purist’ 911 on the way, joining the regular 911 line-up. Yep, that means no limited to the production numbers, and no tricky waiting list to break into.

Talking to Autocar at the reveal for the new Cayenne, Porsche’s R&D head Michael Steiner said that there is “potential for more purist versions of sports cars with no limitation [on production].”

Referring to the 911 R, he said: “What we learned is that there are more and more customers who enjoy pure, fun-to-drive sports cars…For pure sports cars, there’s no need for limitation.”

So far, so vague, but a simpler, more driver-focused 911 has the potential to be brilliant, particularly when even the humble Carrera range is becoming ever more stuffed with technology.

Steiner didn’t offer up any further details on how such a car might shape up, nor did he say whether it’d be part of the current ‘991.2’ range, or the next 911 generation. So, we’re now going to hand this over to you to engage in some healthy speculation in the comments…

Can Elmen

So what about a 911 “Not a Cayman but 718 Edition” with 2.5 flat-4 engine? Nothing more purist car than ever I would guess.

Skinny bodied carrera 2, steel brakes, passive suspension, manual gearbox and a bare-bones spec inside. Some small cosmetic tweaks to set it apart from the others.
It’ll cost more than a loaded carrera 4 though, because Porsche….
