This Notorious Hacker Built A Self-Driving Car In His Garage
Meet George Hotz, the hacker who became an online sensation at the age of 17 when he became the first person to hack an iPhone. He’s made a name for himself finding security flaws in a wide variety of equipment, but now he’s set his sights on building the first affordable autonomous car system.
He’s retrofitted an Acura ILX with a fully working kit, which he built at his home and fitted in his garage. The vehicle currently has an expensive Lidar system similar to the kind used by most autonomous vehicles, which uses lasers to read the road ahead, however Hotz reckons he can replace that with six small cameras costing £13 each.
All in, he believes he can sell the system for $1000 per installation, whether that’s to manufacturers wanting to implement the technology from the showroom, or to individual customers wanting to retrofit the technology to their own cars.

Why does everyone want autonomous car systems so badly?
Just stick to driving as it is :|
Make money on them, simple. There are more non car people than car guys so it will always have a market.
I’m a big car and motorcylce guy. I’d rather take my bike through the rain and cold weather than taking a train or bus. But when i go to my favorite bar, which isn’t very close to my house, i can only drink one beer. Or I have to take the train. And the last train leaves at 11pm. So for these kind of situations, i would love to have an autonomous car. (for when they start driving completely on their own)
safety, people suck at driving.
I bet that guy sees lines of code in his sleep lol
As a programmer I can confirm that we do see code in our sleep.
Except its nightmare of all the code we wrote that failed.
And he should be arrested for testing his system on the public road. Immediately. It sets a ridiculously dangerous precedent.
Relax. How were planes until modern radar systems and auto-pilot begun to work as it does today? Some people might die but the rest of us will just get a better world. Thats how human evolution have worked all the time
I will leave this right here.
Think its gonna be several generations before that happends and then I’ll be old enough to die anyways, if I aint already dead :)
“I don’t know cars, but I know computers and cars are computers”
So sad, but oh, so true… :’(
this is awesome
What i fear is what Clarkson said on TG about autonomous car. Someone who bought the car and decided he can fix it by himself.
If everyone would take as driving as much time and effort as this dude takes to do codes, we wouldn’t ever need any kind of autonomous car systems and we’d all be safe and comfortable enought :P
This seems good because we carguys/petrolhead won’t have to deal with those reckless drivers, paint scratchers, speed lane snails, sub humans and the list just goes on but our blood and sweat will be protected by those emotionless fast action taking computers preventing them or us from crashing. Most of the subhumans will surly buy this kind of cars and i am very happy with it.
Money greedy business men is gonna be over him like a swarm of angry bees. Hope it doesnt f**k him up.
