The Pope's RWD Lamborghini Huracan Sold For Double Its Estimate

The 580-2 which was donated to His Holiness has smashed its original estimate at auction

When RM Sotheby’s announced it was to sell a Lamborghini that belonged to Pope Francis, the auction house gave an estimate of €250,000 - €350,000. But, it turns out a blessing from His Holiness is worth quite a bit more than anticipated: the Huracan 580-2 sold for over double the upper figure at an event in Monaco last weekend.

The hammer came down after bidding reached an incredible €715,000, which was donated to The Vatican last year. The proceeds will be handed to Pope Francis, who’ll divide the cash between four charities. The city of Ninevah in Iraq - which received significant damage during an ISIS occupation - will be the biggest recipient.

The car was extensively customised by Lamborghini’s ‘Ad Personam’ department before being given to the Pope last November, so there’s plenty to set it apart from a regular Huracan. It has a Bianco Monocerus finish with contrasting ‘Giallo Tiberino’ stripes, acting as a tribute to the Vatican City flag. 20-inch Giano wheels fill each arch, behind which you’ll see Nero brake calipers. Most importantly, Pope Francis has signed the bonnet.

All of this might sound like an odd process, but it’s something we’ve seen happen between Italian manufacturers and The Vatican before. Perhaps most notably, Ferrari made a 400th Enzo, and donated it to Pope John Paul II.

So what’s next? An Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, perhaps? A Ferrari 488 Pista? Or how about that incoming Lamborghini Aventador SVJ? Whatever it is, it’ll most certainly net an impressive sum for charity.

I think Francis just got pissed he got the cheapest Huracan, not event an LP610-4, let alone the Performante that he actually wanted. And so decided to sell it

I love how the title of the post suggest, for whatever Good reason, that the Pope is a man who prefers RWD in his choice of supercar.

I’m sure there is something in the Bible somewhere about it…
