Porsche 917-001 Next To Concorde 002 Is Pure Wallpaper Material
Fifty years ago, two machines began stories that would rewrite history; one on the race track and one in the air. Those machines have now been brought together to celebrate the anniversary of when they changed the automotive and aerospace worlds.
Porsche 917 chassis 001, externally restored to stunning condition, began its development in the same month that Concorde 002, the first made in Britain, took its maiden flight from Bristol’s now-defunct Filton Airfield.
Now the two have been pictured together in what can only be described as the most desktop wallpaper-worthy pairing of the year so far. The 917 was taken to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in the small town of Yeovilton, near Yeovil in southern England, where Concorde 002 now rests.
The legendary plane, officially the second prototype after the French-built Concorde 001, has been grounded since 1976, flying for seven years in order to keep testing components. Its Porsche counterpart recently completed a full tour of the UK following its restoration.
The two stars of this photoshoot are forever linked as products of the same envelope-pushing era. They used aerodynamics in new and exciting ways to achieve higher speeds than ever. The 917 destroyed all competition before it throughout the 1970s, while there has never been another commercial airliner like Concorde. There may never be again.
There are many differences, of course. The 917 was built to be lightweight around a spaceframe chassis that weighed just 42kg. Concorde was 78.7 tonnes at empty. Both are iconic and beautiful examples of what the late 1960s, a time of great imagination and growth, could deliver. Enjoy these pictures and remember what awesome machines they were.

The demise of the Concorde was a loss for us all. Granted it was never remotely affordable but the idea of NY to London in 3 hours… in the mid-late 20th century… mind blowing.
And now… now we wait.. and wait… and wait… the only innovation since? Less leg room, more baggage fees. Groundbreaking, truly..

Well, the Paris crash and 9/11 had severe impacts of Concorde as 50+% of Concorde’s regular customers died in the Twin Towers disaster…
A massive shame, but rumour has it that a group of enthusiasts want to bring a Concorde back to flying service.
I had no idea Concorde first flew in ‘69. It looks far more modern that that!

America needs to respond with a GT40 next to an SR-71 Blackbird.
At first the 917 was a dog in 1969 and failed to finish while the Ford GT40 wiped the floor and got its legendary reputation cemented into history, Ford pulled out and Porsche came back in 1970 and wiped the floor with the opposition when it won and Hans Hermann made a promise to his wife he would retire from racing if he won Le Mans….and he did win Le Mans and retired….but as for the SR-71 Blackbird against Concorde hands down SR-71 is the KING of the Air and setting speed records an aircraft that will and has never been matched!
