Porsche Broke Road Atlanta's Production Lap Record With Two Different Cars

Porsche Broke Road Atlanta's Production Lap Record With Two Different Cars

It seems car manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact we’re all getting a bit bored with Nurburgring lap records. Since claiming top production car honours at other tracks isn’t as headline-grabbing, though, Porsche had a trick up its sleeve to attract our attention.

Its first task was to send the 911 GT2 RS around Road Atlanta, in the process clocking a 1:24.88 effort and nabbing the production car lap record from the Dodge Viper ACR. It was a regular GT2, and not the Manthey Racing-fettled version which went faster than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ at the Nurburgring recently, we should note.

Porsche fielded endurance pilot David Donohue and Randy Pobst for the record-hunting exercise, with the latter racing driver claiming the magic time. Rather than go home, however, Porsche decided the GT3 RS should be given a go.

It managed a 1:26.24, a few tenths quicker than the ACR. So now, Porsche can lay claim to the fastest and second-fastest production car laps at the Georgia track.

The lap was recorded and validated by Racelogic using one of its Vbox systems. The cars weren’t quite to factory spec, with both using the “Porsche-approved” ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyre.

No, I think it was just bad wording. The GT2RS did 1:24.88, and the GT3 1:26.24. The article doesn’t explicitly say what the ACR did (other than “a few tenths slower” than the GT3), but the way it’s written makes it very easy to think that the Viper did the 1:24.

Would you crucify me if I said I’d still take the Viper?

What really impresses me is that the GT3 is just 1.36 seconds slower than the GT2. Put it this way, if the GT2 were a Mercedes F1 car, the GT3 would be an upper-midfield car. That’s astounding considering the huge difference in power and price. And the GT3 does it while sounding absolutely insane.

Not only does it sound better, but it looks better as well

It still amazes me how fast that ACR is. 6 speed manual, big 8.4 L v10, real wheel drive… shows how fast a car with a good set up can be

A really long geared, six speed manual which I’ve heard can be tricky to manage. Same with the V10 (powerband broke). As for the drivetrain, ain’t nothing a big ass wing and sticky af tires can’t fix

However, the ACR is a pure manual unlike these two?
