Porsche Has Built An Electric Cayman, And It Makes The GT4 Look Slow

A one-off electric Cayman has been cooked up by Porsche, and it'll do 0-62mph faster than a 911 GT3
Porsche Has Built An Electric Cayman, And It Makes The GT4 Look Slow

Before you get excited/angry (depending on your take on electric cars) you should know that this purely battery powered Cayman is not going into production. Dubbed the Cayman E-Volution, it’s strictly a one-off, built for the Porsche-sponsored Electric Vehicle Symposium in Stuttgart, Germany.

Porsche hasn’t given away much in terms of technical details, other than the car’s modest range of 124 miles, and its 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds. Yes, 3.3 seconds. Over a second faster than the Cayman GT4, and just under a second faster than a PDK 718 Cayman S with the Sport Chrono Pack. Want another comparison? It’s also a tenth faster to 62mph than a 911 GT3.

So if it’s not being put into production, what’s the point? Porsche says the car intends to “give an early indication of just how sporty Porsche believes e-mobility can be,” while also providing “hint of what is to come in 2019” from the Mission E, its first all-electric production car.

The Cayman E-Volution is also hooked up to something rather important: ‘Porsche Turbo Charging’. It’s the Stuttgart firm’s first “accumulator-based fast charging system,” capable of supplying up to 320kW per vehicle. In other words, more than twice what a Tesla Supercharger manages. The plan is to have a network across Europe by 2020 via a joint venture between Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Ford.

But going back to the car, what do you think of it? Sacrilegious, or weirdly appealing? Sound off in the comments section below…

Ten years from now I will taking my son to the local track to watch 911 Cup and RSR cars with fully electric motors race silently. But I will drive him there in my old fashioned noisy and slow N/A flat six powered Cayman.

Oh? 0-62 in 3.33 seconds?
That’s cute, how about 0-62 in 2.6 seconds.
