An opportunity to buy an F1 car driven by a legend in one of the most dangerous eras of the sport sounds like the makings of a petrolhead's dream. So when James Hunt's 1974 Hesketh 308 Formula 1 car was confirmed to be going under the hammer with RM Auctions at the glamorous Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, we had to find out more.

As it turns out, our dreams of re-enacting the lifestyle of 'playboy-Hunt' aren't likely to become a reality, because the car that Hunt drove to victory at the 1974 Silverstone International Trophy isn't expected to give much change back from £500,000.

You do get good performance for that big lump of cash, at least. It was designed by renowned F1 engineer Harvey Postlethwaite and utilises a Cosworth DFV V8 that can produce 443bhp; plenty considering the car weighs in at under 600kg. Though due to competition from far larger-budgeted teams like Lotus and Ferrari, the 308 enjoyed only limited success.

So, if you're absolutely loaded, or don't mind selling your house to buy an iconic F1 car, the auction for the 308 will take place in Monaco on the 10th of May.
