The Production-Previewing VW ID Space Vizzion Is A Fast EV Wagon
Sick of all these electric crossovers and SUVs that are coming out of the woodwork? You may like this.
It’s the VW ID Space Vizzion concept, and other than the silly name, we like everything about it. The Space Vizzion is an all-electric estate car, and as we know, wagons are the best kinds of vehicle. And that’s science fact. Maybe.
The Space Vizzion is based around VW’s new MEB electric vehicle architecture. There’s an 82kWh battery sitting under the floor, which powers two electric motors - one for each axle. The powertrain is good for a range of 367 miles going by the WLTP cycle, or 300 miles according to the EPA rating.
It’s quick, too. The total system output is 335bhp, which makes for a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds. That’s brisk enough to beat almost every front-wheel drive hot hatch out there.
The cabin is a roomy place, with VW claiming the concept is more akin to a posh long-wheelbase saloon than a mid-range car when it comes to space. There’s no centre console, with the middle of the dashboard instead dominated by a gigantic 15.6-inch touchscreen.
What’s more interesting, though, is the tech you can’t see. Projected onto the windscreen is an augmented reality head-up display, intended to replace the traditional digital instrument cluster. Behind the steering wheel is a much smaller display which shows only key driving information.
See those seats? The material might look like leather, but it’s not. It’s an artificial material called ‘AppleSkin’, which is partly made from “residual material” left over from apple juice manufacturing.
As with previous ID concepts, the Space Vizzion isn’t just a fancy show car. VW says it “previews the future production version for Europe and North America,” and judging by the original ID concept - which morphed into the ID3 - the showroom version of this will look fairly similar.
Fancy checking out the Space Vizzion in the metal and, erm, AppleSkin? It’s on display now at the LA Auto Show.

Maybe? The wagon’s shape resemblance is close to that of a symettrical aircraft wing which science will tell you has the least drag co-efficiency, allowing the car to get better range and less stress on the internals. :)
Wagons have higher drag than sedans, just look at the fuel consumption of literally every wagon ever made. It’s usually ~0.5l/100km higher than the sedan body style of the same car, and that’s not just because the wagon is heavier.
The reason why VW released a wagon is that Europeans (especially Germans) still buy tons of wagons. If you’re driving along in Europe you’ll see tons of Skoda Octavia and Audi A6 wagons, but the sedan versions of the two are much less common.
Uh… don’t think that’s right Lol… the rear of the car isn’t helpful for aero, and if anything it’s a backwards airfoil.
Finally, an electric car i’d buy! Sign me up…… now where can i sell a kidney
Looks good, the interior is a bit over-the-top with this screen
why new cars nowadays have to have a giant tablet slap on the middle of dash.
Zero effort for continuity here.
White carpet? White interior? White wheel?? Ya’d have to be a Monk or Lady Hibbard to keep this motor clean… What a daft concept
