£32k Buys You A V12 TDI Audi Q7 With The Same Torque As A Pagani Huayra

Having tested the new SQ7 recently, we thought we dig out an example of its even torquier predecessor out of the classifieds

“664lb ft - that’s cute” - read the caption on the meme at the top of the comments page of our Audi SQ7 review. Given that the image this text was slapped on depicted the V12 TDI Q7, the SQ7’s predecessor, I suppose the CTzen had a point.

738lb ft of torque. That’s the amount of twist available from the beast’s 6.0-litre, twin-turbo V12 diesel engine. That’s just 2lb ft off a Pagani Huayra, and the bonkers 9FF GT9. In fact there’s not much out that produces more torque in the motoring world: go any higher and you’re in an area dominated by the likes of Koenigsegg and Bugatti.

It’s more powerful than the SQ7’s V8, too. The colossal engine, claimed by Audi to borrow technology from the firm’s R10 TDI endurance racer, puts out 493bhp. So it’s an impressive technical achievement, but thanks in part to the previous-gen Q7 being much heavier than the new one, it’s slower: 0-62mph takes 5.5 seconds, compared to 4.8 in the SQ7.

Unsurprisingly, this massive, borderline antisocial SUV didn’t sell in particularly large numbers. If you believe the numbers on Howmanyleft.com (which are usually best taken with a pinch of salt), just 31 are registered in the UK. It’s still as niche a product today as it was when the model still occupied vast areas of Audi showrooms, but it is at least a lot cheaper.

Originally, Audi charged getting on for £100,000 for these things, but now you’ll pay less than a third. This one is up at £32,295, although it is a little on the leggy side with 88,500 miles on the clock. We can think of many other ways we’d prefer to spend that kind of cash on the used market, but if you want to roll around on supreme comfort while packing the kind of torque that’ll slow down the rotation of the Earth, you’ll struggle to do better.

No doubt, 738 lb-ft is impressive, but many pickups over here are making around or more than 900 lb-ft. Ford Super Duty has got 925.

But the Ford Super Duty is a commerical vehicle that really needs that much torque. The Q7 is a passenger car.

Put a back over it and transform it into an SUV. That would be awesome and if you lower it, you get a maaaaaaaad wagon.

There really is no comparing though.
The Audi Q7 is a luxury way to travel. The pick ups you have are or should be for commercial use, and have horrendous interiors.

There are so little of these Audi’s left because dieselgate :( . Maybe we can use these then to power spaceships to go to other universes.

For around $40k you can get a 6.7L ford powerstroke deisel with about 900ft/lbs and over 400hp stock, but then again it weighs 8-9,000 lbs so it aint fast but it goes for a truck

Yes but an Audi Q7 isn’t in the same league as a Ford truck unless you need it for work or something then you have to make a compromise and not a happy one in my opinion.
