Rejoice: Lorry Underride Bars That Actually Work Are Now In Existence
As has been highlighted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) before, underride guards on lorries are often quite rubbish at the one job they have. The idea is they stop cars sliding under trailers, but the reality is many are ineffectual at avoiding the kind of accident that that no airbag nor crumble zone can combat.
Thankfully, it seems things are beginning to change. The IIHS has this week released a series of videos showing its ‘Toughguard’ award winners, which all do a much better job and stopping horrific, windscreen crushing accidents the traditional underride bars we’re used to seeing.
Five designs were highlighted: the Wasbach, Stoughton, Vanguard, Manac and Great Dane. Hopefully we’ll be seeing these safer bits of kit out on the road soon…

Maybe I enjoyed being bifurcated
there were always better designs out there, we just dont use them yet
Now drivers can feel a little safer updating their Facebook status on the motorway
What about a lorry underride bar vs old volvo.
welcome to the 1990’s ‘murica…. those became mandatory in Switzerland in 1996 i think.
Darwinisim. If you can’t look up and see a whole artic trailer (semi trailer) then it’s just natural selection at work.
these are nothing new, all lorrys have had to have them in the EU for years (first in the 80’s I think)
What about the ones that equipped with a tail lift? You cant fit a bar on them and lets be fair theres quite a few of those on the roads
What Fast and Furious think about it…
