Following Jeremy Clarkson’s sacking from Top Gear, you may have had the pleasure of watching James May’s hilarious doorstep interviews. In between politely inviting journalists in for tea and discussing his new found love for the recorder, May kept referring to the fact he had to get back to selling his motorbike.

The pair wanted to make it clear that they aren’t selling the bikes because they’re unemployed, with the auction planned well before the whole ‘fracas’ incident blew up. May told Bonhams: “I was going to sell these bikes anyway. And those paintings, and my collection of Scalextric cars. Honest”. Hammond agreed, saying “I also have a canoe…if anyone’s interested”.

The collection will go under the hammer at the Bonhams Stafford Sale on 26 April, hosted by the International Classic MotorCycle Show at Staffordshire County Showground.
