RML Teases Le Mans-Inspired Porsche 911 Project

Codenamed P39, this modified 911 is said to be inspired by modern-day Le Mans racers and is one of four projects the racing and engineering team has coming

RML – Ray Mallock Limited – is one of those names you might not have heard of unless you’re deeply entrenched in the British motorsport industry, but in that world, it’s a hugely respected outfit. More recently, it’s branched out from pure motorsport projects, something that’s set to continue with this serious-looking modified Porsche 911.

Codenamed P39, it’s one of four projects the company has in the works to coincide with its 40th anniversary, each from a new dedicated division: Motorsport, Engineering, Power and Bespoke.

P39 comes from the engineering division, and it’s the only one of the four we’re getting a proper look at for now. Said to be inspired by the current top-flight Le Mans Hypercar regulations, it’s clearly a serious prospect: the 911’s rear windscreen is gone entirely, replaced by an air intake running down the length of its spine. There’s also some serious aero going on front and rear. It’s almost reminiscent of the legendary 911 GT1 homologation special of the late ’90s.

RML says it’ll massively up the ante when it comes to speed and handling, all while keeping it as reliable as a regular 911. It’ll have a range of aero and power options to choose from, too, and can be based on various 911 models. That’s about all we know for now – your guess is as good as ours on whether it’ll be road-legal or a track-only special.

Before we see that in full, though, we’re likely to get a look at project P40, from RML’s Motorsport division. It’s set to be a track day car with F1-inspired aero and promises to achieve “new levels of speed and handling” within the track day genre. The last time we heard anything like that, the result was the bonkers Caparo T1. That’s all we’ll say.

The final full vehicle of the four projects comes from the Bespoke department. It’s set to be a ‘SuperClassic’ interpretation of the ’70s Aston Martin V8 Vantage, teaming its muscle-car-in-a-tweed-suit looks with a full carbon body and modern mechanical bits.

Finally, coming from the Power division is not a car but a powertrain component: the VarEVolt high-performance battery module. This, apparently, is already being installed in various electrified supercars, including “a current Goodwood FoS record holder.” It doesn’t say which, but a quick Google reveals it’s most likely the Czinger 21C.

When we’ll get to see any of these projects in full is a mystery for now, but given that we’re already a good chunk of the way through RML’s 40th birthday year, we probably won’t have to wait too long.
