Say Hello To The VW Arteon: The Passat's Posh Big Brother
Passat just not big or swanky enough for you? Fear not, as VW has an answer, and it’s called the Arteon.
It’s essentially a replacement for the recently discontinued Passat CC, although it’s been pushed further north of the CC and deeper into premium territory.
The five-door Arteon is wider and has a longer wheelbase than the Passat, giving more space inside. It also makes it an imposingly large thing in the metal - despite the relatively modest growth - particularly with the optional 20-inch wheels fitted.
It’s based on VW’s MQB platform, which means the usual range of transversely mounted petrol and diesel engines. The range kicks off with Wolfsburg’s new 1.5-litre TSI ‘Evo’ engine, ending with a 276bhp 2.0-litre TSI. The most powerful diesel meanwhile is good for 236bhp.
On the tech front, the Arteon gets the new Active Info Display system (VW’s take on Audi Virtual Cockpit, in other words) and Discover Pro infotainment system we’ve already seen in the new Golf. And yes, that does include the intriguing but slightly clunky gesture control system.
The lights are clever too, featuring a “predictive beam control” system that illuminates corners with a portion of the headlights using GPS data. The cruise control meanwhile will adjust its speed according to speed limit information, should you wish.
Want one? The range is expected to start in the region of £30,000 when it goes on sale in the UK later this year.

SH*T, wrong post. Please ignore!
Dat Volkswagen doe.
So a bigger A6?
VW-badged A5 actually.
Looking at cars of 2017 like…
I like how they got away from the brain-amputated “every car must look the same” idea for once. Though it looks like its overhangs (both front and rear) are too short for the wheelbase. Its side profile looks really well-made, but the front and rear look too short and too bulky for it.
On the other hand, the interor space (especially in the rear) is probably going to profit alot from the long wheel base.
Looks good, but I don’t like the body coloured plastic at the top of the bumper that is supposed to make the bonnet look longer (top image). I would just get rid of it and make the grille a bit bigger (bottom image).
Much better👌🏼 besides that this car is pretty darn good looking
I agree. Besides, you can see the line so there is no point that VW put that there to make the bonnet bigger.
and you have just created 2nd year model
Wow I thought I was the only one that was bothered by that line haha, If I’d get one, I’d wrap that little plastic thing in black.
you are the real mvp
Is that a Honda?
God I love this, I don’t even know why
It’s quite sad how the VAG uses the same FWD platform even for the “premium” cars
Ofcourse they use the same platform, why spend money creating a new one when the current one works just fine
I don’t get it, why use FWD for big premium cars, that’s makes them less premium in my mind, AWD would be awesome or RWD
There will be AWD versions. Hence, the 240HP 2.0 biTDI is AWD only.
