Sebastian Vettel Made A Classy Impact In The Mercedes Garage

After conceding the 2018 Formula 1 title to Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel was filmed congratulating staff in the Mercedes garage

Sebastian Vettel may have failed to wrestle the F1 driverā€™s championship back from Lewis Hamilton, but after the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday he still made an impact with Mercedes.

He was caught on video in one of Mercedesā€™ temporary buildings in the paddock. After a short chat with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff he visited the teamā€™s staff, shook a few hands and congratulated them all on taking the first of the two F1 titles up for grabs.

In return the Mercedes team gave the Ferrari man an equally gracious round of applause as he left the building, brushing past Valtteri Bottas on the way. Thereā€™s so much at stake in modern F1 that we donā€™t often see two-way sportsmanship of this level, which makes this moment all the more special. Well done Mercedes, and well done Herr Vettel.

The four-time champion was also an absolute gentleman in public after the race, momentarily shunning his media duties to congratulate Hamilton. In interviews he sent Hamilton a tonne of praise and even admitted that the Brit was the better driver this year. Vettel said:

ā€œHe drove superbly all year. He was the better one of us two. I told him it was well deserved and to enjoy it. Number five, I think itā€™s something incredible. So I mainly congratulated him and asked him to keep pushing for next year and said Iā€™ll do my best to fight him again.ā€

Meanwhile, the constructorsā€™ championship is still open ā€“ just. Mercedes are in the driving seat with 585 points with Ferrari behind on 530. Mercedes only need their cars to finish anywhere high up the order in Brazil and that title will be sealed as well. Ferrari, meanwhile, need to grab 1-2 finishes in the final two races to stand any real chance of snatching it.

A sign of a good sportsmanship there, if the roles were reversed if Vettel had won the title here, would Lewis have marched into Ferrari and congulated the head of Scuderia Ferrari?

Not an LH fan, but he would

Indeed, anyone would

At least just because there is so much media attention. Do it - and there is some positive PR, dont do it - and ppl hate you.

Sorry to interrupt but did anyone else see the two people at the end that werenā€™t smiling when they patted his back so long it looked like a shove?
