Seeing This DIY MX-5 Fastback Might Give You A 'Guy Crisis'
If, like us, you lusted over the super-rare Mazda MX-5 coupe production car we featured yesterday, then you’ll simply love this brilliant-looking DIY ‘fastback’ version.
In the pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency, two Australians ditched the car’s soft-top in favour of this fastback design for their MX-5 track weapon. Built in their garage after work hours, the pair quickly made their first fibreglass prototype.
Since then, two more tops have been made using Vacuum Resin Infused Carbon; each unit weighs just 8kg, including the windows and boot section. To put that into perspective, the factory soft-top tips the scales at around 20kg, plus 10kg for the boot and hinges.
The only downside to this conversion is that you lose access to the boot. Because it’s to be used on track, however, this isn’t an issue for the racing duo.
Aside from the self-made carbonfibre bonnet’s styling, we love this brilliant take on an iconic car. It reduces weight, improves aerodynamics and makes the Cayman look even less attractive.
