The dramatic CCTV footage above shows the moment London bus driver Mohammed Khalique lost control of his Routemaster bus. The video shows Khalique pulling away from a bus stop, and accelerating through a red light, narrowly avoiding a Peugeot 107.

The driver told police: “As soon as I pull out [the] bus is going like a bullet, it’s generating itself speed.” He tried the brakes and the engine isolator, but both were “completely dead.”

15 people were injured in the crash, three seriously. Prosecutors claimed that Mr. Khalique had been pumping the accelerator instead of the brake, however the defence called on two expert witnesses who claimed their analysis suggested the bus crashed because of an electrical failure.

The judge found Khalique not guilty, saying “I cannot be sure that it was Mr Khalique at fault, rather than an unascertained, potentially crucial, computer glitch…I cannot be sure beyond reasonable doubt that it was your driving at fault.”
