Should Our BMW M2 Longtermer Be A Manual, Or An Automatic?

Should Our BMW M2 Longtermer Be A Manual, Or An Automatic?

Recently, we enjoyed a very entertaining week with a BMW M2, which saw us bomb down the autobahn to the Nurburgring N24 and go for a lap of the Nordschleife. Since we’re greedy, we still wanted more time with the M2, and fortunately, we’ve been granted our wish: this September a BMW M2 will be joining Car Throttle’s long-term test fleet, alongside ‘our’ Honda Civic Type R and another awesome car which is set to arrive in the coming weeks.

Should Our BMW M2 Longtermer Be A Manual, Or An Automatic?

Whatever happens the M2 will be a Long Beach Blue example, but we have been given a choice of transmissions: the six-speed manual, or the seven-speed dual-clutch. To help us make our decision, we want to know what kind of M2 you’d rather see. Get voting!

sadly Auto Rev matching makes it sooo easy. I like cars that are difficult to drive, have a good kick and the potential to kill you if you are doing sth. wrong. Todays cars do not offer that anymore. And even though they get that elecrtric steering feedback almost right I still prefer good old Servosteering, even though it is not as fail proof as the electic motor in electric steering. That M2 had the chance to be my next favourite BMW, but it missed the chance. I will still decide what my next fun car is between E46 M3 and E92 M3. But there is time to go by until I buy one of those.

That’s not it. The M2 is just a car that I feel suits a manual transmission better. It’s not just a numbers car, it’s about having fun. It’s a love letter to the BMWs of old. And so it should have a manual gearbox. Although the crackles on downshifts from the DCT do sound amazing.

Disagreed. There are some cars where (given the option) an automatic is a more preferred option, but the manual is the option that would better fit the character of a car like the M2

I’m going to get flamed for this but get an auto one! You have plenty experience with Manual M cars to see if the Automatic can measure up to rowing your own gears in daily situations.

The M2 we took to Germany was the DCT, and it is a good gearbox, certainly better than it is in the M3/M4 where it’s stupidly aggressive. BUT, I’ve heard good things about the stick shifter, which is said to be a big improvement over other current BMW manuals

Manual for more driftyness, but I have to admit that the paddle shift box from BMW is pretty good

The DCT gearbox, it’s quicker. And call it by it’s correct name!

The whole purpose of the M2 is to be simple, and the DCT is out of place, unless you’re racing for a living
