While filming the next series of Top Gear last week, Jeremy Clarkson and James May staged a crash between two Peugeots. The stunt, which took place on the B4437 in Oxfordshire, was close to the location where a 26-year-old woman died in her Peugeot 106 after a head-on collision in 2010.

The Daily Mail is reporting that a number of prominent figures in the community have spoken out against the show, including local councillor Victoria Edwards, who called the location of the shoot ‘insensitive and reckless.’ She continued, saying “There are plenty of places in Oxfordshire to stage a stunt. To do it at the scene of a crash is insensitive towards the family.”

The ‘controversy’ comes off the back of Clarkson’s recent accusations of racism, which he ardently denied. The BBC gave him a final warning, but with such passionately anti-Top Gear groups out there, it was only a matter of time before something came up.

The thing is, the Daily Mail article even admits the show was unaware of the prior accident. Anyone who has driven country lanes in Britain knows how dangerous they are. I grew up in the countryside and, as sad as it is to say, flowers attached to a tree are a regular sight.

There’s no doubt that some of the trio’s humour is a little risky, but that’s why we love them. It’s such a shame to see overly sensitive people who don’t like the show so determined to ruin it for everyone else. If they genuinely do something wrong, then of course they should be reprimanded, but this case just reeks of bored people making a mountain out of a mole hill.
