Soon Your iPhone Won't Work While You're Driving

As part of its iOS 11 operating system, Apple is introducing a system to deactivate notifications with the hope of removing the temptation to check your phone or even type messages while driving

Apple is about to get involved with your life every time you get behind the wheel. Specifically, the company is trying to save it.

When the company releases iOS 11, users will find a new feature prompting them to activate a ‘do not disturb while driving’ mode, which will prevent any notifications appearing at all. The idea is to take away the temptation for we young ‘uns to look at our smartphones while we’re driving. To be fair, it really is a daft thing to do and it does cost lives.

If the phone owner ‘forgets’ to turn it on, the phone can guess when it’s in a moving vehicle anyway, thanks to its motion sensors, GPS and WiFi systems. Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving, but easy if you’re an innocent passenger.

The system won’t stop you pre-connecting the phone via Bluetooth or USB, allowing you to access some of the device’s functions legally through the car.

The software can also ping a simple reply to anyone who messages the driver’s phone while they’re behind the wheel. Something along the lines of an automated “I’m driving right now and will get back to you when I get where I’m going” is thought to be the gist of it. A similar Android app to perform the same job already exists.

Developers are even working on software to sell to companies, who would then force their staff to use it. What’s your take on this? Should phone makers be taking steps to stop people using their phones while driving, and will people simply activate any override they can, no matter the danger?

You’re the only intelligent person that realizes this is making it even more dangerous. “Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving” They’ll still turn it off no matter how difficult it is. Texting should be done all by voice command to Siri and have Siri auto send when you say send. That way you don’t even have to touch your phone. But Apple needs to make Siri better for that to work.

When a huge tech company takes on a problem that’s not their fault because the common man can’t take responsibility. I don’t think this will change much, though.

As much as I’m against Texting & driving this will only make it even more dangerous since it will be purposefully difficult to turn off while driving. People who already text while driving will find a way to turn it off while driving. Even if they now have to take two hands off the steering wheel they will do it risking other drivers safety. The only fix for text to have everything voice commanded so that you do not have to pick up the phone at all. Just speak a loud to Siri and have her send a text. Yes you shouldn’t text at all but people will still do it. Making it even more difficult is the wrong answer.

“Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving” That’s the quote. People will still turn it off no matter how difficult thus making it even more un-safe.
