Spectators Sprayed With Burning Fuel During Burnout Competition, 12 Injured
Warning: The video below contains scenes some may find distressing
12 people have been left injured following a terrifying flash fire at the Red CentreNATS show in Australia’s Northern Territory.
The incident occurred during a burnout display on Sunday afternoon, which saw a car spray burning fuel into a crowd of spectators. 11 of the 12 injured spectators were taken to hospital.
One 47-year-old man suffered critical injuries, with burns to 20 per cent of his body. The man’s 19-year-old son is among the eight people said to be in a stable condition in hospital as of Monday morning.
In a statement, the event’s organisers said: “This is a distressing situation, however all patients are receiving the care they need.” The competition was cancelled immediately after the fire, and police are currently investigating what went wrong.
A great deal of us take huge pleasure from attending car events, so it’s disheartening to see one end like this. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for all those involved.
